Retirement-or is life just beginning?

independent senior livingRetirement – is it the end? Thanks to medical science, and the fact that people are taking better care of themselves, many seniors look forward to a long, enjoyable retirement. These days, retired people can range from middle-aged, athletic couples, who play tennis every afternoon, to those who have been retired for decades. So, rather than the end, it is a new beginning, and an opportunity to live life fully as part of your active senior lifestyle. After decades of working, it’s time to treat yourself to a life of leisure. Relax, savor the little things in life and enjoy the new unhurried pace of your life.

Your independent living community offers many activities to look forward to as you embark on this new chapter in your life.

  • Swimming

is one of the best total body workouts, easy on the joints and invigorating. If you are fortunate enough to have access to a swimming pool on a hot day, take advantage of it often.

  • Visiting friends and family.

How many years has it been since you’ve seen your favorite cousin or old school friend? Pick up the phone, arrange a visit and rekindle that friendship.

  • Reading.

If you like to read, this is the time to do it. Your community may have a library with a great collection of books to enjoy, or you can download your favorite books on a tablet – enjoy a new cozy mystery series or re-read a classic.

  • Book club.

Does your community currently have a book club? No? Start one yourself. Assign a book, and meet once a week to discuss the plot over homemade cookies and tea!

  • Crafts.

Have you always been interested in scrapbooking but never had the time? Or needlepoint, or painting? Take a class, learn a hobby and discover a new passion.

  • Travel.

Not having to hurry back from your trip to return to work makes your trip so much more relaxing. Half the fun is planning your trip. And you don’t have to travel halfway around the world. Take a road trip to that national park you’ve been reading about, or to the big city to visit museums, zoos or aquariums.

Whatever you decide to do, do it with a joyful heart and a smile on your face. You’ve come a long way, and it’s just the beginning!
